The Hope Project

The loan for the school building was fully funded.

Hi friends,

I am back to blogging after a long time. This time I am writing for a young and energetic person, Mr P. Suresh, who set out to give at least a basic schooling to children in the local community near Devanahalli taluk, Bangalore.

Schooling in Bangalore city costs the earth. From there it is not hard to picture what it is like for children in a lower-middle-class or working family. Most of us want to help. We feel it. In a city this busy, the thing that stops us is time. That is where someone like Mr P. Suresh stands apart. He gave his time so that more children could be taught.

Teaching a child is the most useful help there is. Maria Montessori, the Italian physician and educator, put it this way: "Help a child to help himself."

Enough of the preamble. Mr P. Suresh runs Gnana Jyothi Public School near Devanahalli taluk, Bangalore. The school has classes from 1 to 8, and about 250 students. Ten teachers are on the staff. The building needs urgent repairs. Mr Suresh asked Varthana, a field partner of Milaap, for a loan of Rs 2,00,000 to repair and renovate it. A sound building would give the students a place where they can actually learn.

On his behalf I asked people to lend toward that work.

This was not a donation. It was a loan. Once the school could stand on its own, the money was to be paid back.

The appeal was The Hope Project for Gnana Jyothi Public School on Milaap. It was fully funded. Milaap later marked the loan fully repaid, on a 36-month term from April 2014 to April 2017.

Milaap also listed other needs. I still think education is the one that reaches the next generation.

Thanks for your patience.
